Hi my zoulous and welcome to this new article.
In this video, we are going to talk about a very strong frontline unit. I present to you the Palace guard!

Obtaining Palace guard

Let’s start with how to obtain them.
The Palace guard are accessible through the unit tree by pressing U, then unit tree, then infantry. Of course, you will need to unlock the previous units before the Palace guard to gain access to them.

Once the Palace guard have been unlocked, there are several points to go over.

Veterancy Palace guard

Let’s talk about veterancy.

The Palace guard have 2 veterancy lines.
The top line is mainly interesting for dealing additional damage, while the bottom line focuses on tankiness. Currently, both veterancy lines are viable.
The top line allows you to play Palace Guards that can deal damage.
This is especially useful in siege battles or when you are generally not playing in a group. The bottom line, on the other hand, is mostly used in tournaments or within a coordinated group to fulfill the frontline role.

Doctrines Palace guard

Regarding doctrines,

It is important to play with the unit doctrine that reduces the cooldown of “Protect the Throne” by 7 seconds, which is extremely important for this unit.
You can then add tanking doctrines, for example:
Iron Health to obtain the Dragon skill on the unit
Health and resistance doctrines that increase total HP as well as resistances.
You also have the option to add a unit damage doctrine, which makes a lone Palace Guard more dangerous, or an anti-infantry doctrine.

Masteries Palace guard

Let’s move on to masteries.

The Palace guard have very important masteries.
First of all, we have the various attributes that strengthen our Palace Guards: health, resistance, additional resistance against polearms, and bonus damage.

Next, we have Lightning Reflexes, which temporarily increases the damage dealt by the Palace Guards, and most importantly Stealth, which first reduces the cooldown of Protect the Throne and, more importantly, reduces the cooldown by 0.3 seconds whenever the Palace Guards take damage.
This mastery allows us to switch very quickly between anchoring and standing stance, making the unit more resilient and able to deal more damage.

That concludes the customization of the Palace guard, now let’s move on to their usage.

Role of the Palace guard

Traditionally, Palace Guards are a solid frontline unit, meaning you have the heavy responsibility of engaging fights.
In practice, the standard use is to charge into the enemy blob. Once in contact, activate the anchoring skill, which allows the Palace Guards to tank the enemy’s initial burst.
From that point, there are two possible outcomes.
If the enemies start to collapse, you can immediately activate the skill “For the Power,” which deals damage and provides increased mobility to the Palace Guards, then re-anchor right away.
Second possibility: the enemy starts winning the fight. In that case, try to extend the anchoring duration and switch right at the end of the anti-CC effect. You should wait about 4 seconds before reactivating “For the Power,” as you take significantly more damage while not anchored, and of course re-anchor quickly afterward.
If you have the Dragon doctrine, do not hesitate to use it at the moment of contact.
A small tip: if you find yourself in a situation where cavalry is charging you head-on and you cannot dodge it, do not hesitate to enter anchoring just before impact. Palace Guards hold up fairly well during the first seconds of anchoring.

Formations Palace guard

Let’s now take a closer look at formations.

Palace Guards have 2 or even 3 formations depending on the selected veterancy.
The first formation consists of two wide lines spread across the width. This formation is not very useful, as it splits both DPS and tanking. I do not recommend using it in most cases.

Second formation: the block formation, the shield wall.
This formation is very effective for choke points, as it creates a solid blockade and concentrates damage on a relatively precise area.

The third formation is only available with the bottom veterancy line.
This formation protects Palace Guards from projectiles and also shields allies behind them, while also enabling effective blocking after a charge followed by anchoring.
Be careful: Palace Guards only attack in front of them while anchored. If an enemy unit gets behind or attacks from the sides, Palace Guards can be wiped out very quickly.
