Hi my zoulous and welcome to this new article.
In this video we are going to talk about a cheap and very interesting infantry unit. I’m talking about the Rattan round shields!
Obtaining Rattan round shields
Let’s start with how to obtain them.
The Rattan round shields can be unlocked through the unit tree under Rattan-equipped units. Of course, to unlock the Rattan round shields, you will need to unlock the previous nodes first.
Once the Rattan round shields are acquired, there are several points to go over.
Veterancy Rattan round shields
Let’s talk about veterancy.
The Rattan round shields have 2 veterancy paths.
The top line focuses mainly on increasing damage, while the bottom line is more oriented toward defense.
Doctrines Rattan round shields
Regarding doctrines
You have 3 doctrines that focus on charging.
The first one reduces damage taken during the charge by 40%, the second reduces charge cooldown time by 24% AND adds 1 additional target hit per unit model, and the last one increases charge damage while also inflicting guard break on shielded units.
To increase your unit’s survivability, you can also add the Iron Health doctrine, which unlocks the Dragon skill and adds extra health points.
And finally, the poison doctrine allows you to increase poison damage.
Masteries Rattan round shields
Let’s move on to masteries.

The Rattan round shields also have an important mastery that globally increases their stats, but more importantly, the Poisoned Rattan point creates a poisoned area of effect that heavily reduces enemy movement speed and damage.
On top of that, their attacks inflict hemorrhagic damage. This point is extremely useful for debuffing an enemy blob.
The Indirect Methods point is simply a boost to the debuffs inflicted by Poisoned Rattan.
That concludes the customization of the Rattan round shields. Let’s now move on to how to use them.
Role of the Rattan round shields
By nature, the round shield infantryman is a blob-support unit.
It can massively debuff enemy damage and prevent them from retreating by reducing their movement capabilities. It is a very good unit to play in a group.
In practice, you can engage just behind the frontline with your charge, which, as a reminder, reduces damage taken.
(Be careful though: you should avoid charging head-on into a braced unit, as you risk taking heavy damage.) Once in contact, activate the Dragon skill to last longer, then you can let your unit do its job and play your hero to support the blob or possibly go after isolated or other high-value targets.
Formations Rattan round shields
Let’s move on to formations. The Rattan round shields have 3 formations.First, the dispersed formation. The interest of this formation is that it is quite wide, and when you charge, the central part will impact frontally while the edges can hit the flanks when you press V, which helps with disruption and overall debuffing.
Be careful though, this formation can be difficult to use in urban combat situations.
Next, we have the column formation. This formation is much tighter and can be interesting, especially if you are able to flank or attack from behind.
Finally, the schiltron formation. This formation is very similar to the column formation, because when you charge, all your units move in the same direction, producing an effect quite close to that of the column formation.
