Today we are going to talk about starting a new character on Conqueror's Blade. For this second part of the article, we will focus on the units to pick for a good start and on the methods that exist to unlock them!
If you haven’t seen the first part yet, which focuses on the
hero, I invite you to check it out if you’re interested.
So let’s get back to the topic with units.
After selecting your hero’s weapon and completing the first tutorials, you will choose 3 level 2 units, generally abbreviated as T2, and one level 3 unit, abbreviated as T3.
Choosing units to start with
The first choice without hesitation should be the Militia Pikemen. Indeed, this is a cheap T2 unit and particularly effective against cavalry. Even when you reach a higher level, it will allow you to complete your unit compositions.
Regarding the second choice, the Ironcap Swordsmen are an infantry unit equipped with a fairly decent charge to start with and can sometimes one-shot poorly positioned heroes.
And finally, for the last T2 unit, I recommend the Demesne Spearmen, which represent one of the first shield units in the game. They will allow you, in your first matches, to familiarize yourself with the shield concept.
Let’s now move on to selecting the T3 unit. You can choose between Squires, Ironcap Spearmen, and Halberdiers. Personally, I recommend the Halberdiers, who can at least partially counter cavalry and later be upgraded into Landsknechts.
Methods for unlocking units
Let’s continue with obtaining new units. Conqueror’s Blade allows you to unlock new units using two main methods.
The unit tree
The first method is simply by going through the unit tree.
To do this, press U and then Unit Tree. This follows a fairly classic system: to reach the end of a branch, you will need to unlock the previous components using Honor. If you want to know how to obtain
Honor, I invite you to check out the tutorial on the subject.
Once unlocked, you simply need to craft them in your barracks by clicking on U, then Barracks, left-clicking on the unit type you want to craft, and finally selecting your unit.
By the way, I’ll take this opportunity to recommend a few units that can be unlocked in the unit tree and are effective in many situations.
- First, the
Imperial Pike Guards. A very useful unit for stopping cavalry or infantry by using their famous Imperial Advance. Be careful: this advance does not work against certain shielded units or units immune to stun.
- Second unit, the Palace Guards. This is a very durable unit with good damage, perfect for a frontline.
- And the third unit, the Winged Hussars, which are a charge cavalry unit capable of dealing massive damage.
Seasons
The second method for obtaining units is through seasons.
Indeed, Conqueror's Blade operates in seasons, and each season brings its share of new units. To unlock them, you must first reach hero level 15.
Then select the season you want in order to unlock the associated units. Concretely, you will need to complete various activities and actions accessible by pressing F5 and then Seasonal Challenges.
Once these are completed, the unit will be directly available in your barracks.
Recommended seasons
There are many interesting seasons, so I’ll give you a few pointers to help you make your choice.
Personally, I recommend starting with Season 4—not for the units it contains, but rather for the side challenge “Military Pledge,” which will allow you to obtain a free T3 unit as well as a T4 unit through the Synacle system that we will explain a bit later.
Once the Military Pledge challenge is completed, you will need to change seasons.
The second season I recommend is Season 3. Indeed, the four units offered are interesting, especially the Fortebraccio Pikemen, which are a very effective anti-cavalry unit and widely used in GvG. Additionally, this season allows you to unlock the War Maul. However, at first, I do not recommend unlocking the two T5 units, as they are somewhat specific and not necessarily suited for beginners.
The next season I recommend is Season 8, as it contains the Modao Battalion, another very interesting anti-cavalry unit that can also handle infantry. The ‘Grandpa’ unit is a good shield unit despite its limited formation width. Additionally, during this season you will have the opportunity to unlock the Pike, which I remind you is part of the so-called META classes.
As a second step, once the challenges, Fortebraccio, Grandpa units, and Modaos are unlocked, I recommend Season 6. This will allow you to unlock the Ribauldequins, strong and accessible T4 cavalry units with a relatively low influence cost. And if you chose Halberdiers as your starter unit, you will be able to evolve them into Landsknechts through this season.
You can then continue with Season 2, featuring the famous Namkhan Archers, which are inexpensive and deal significant DPS, as well as the Keshig, a very powerful T5 cavalry unit that is easy to handle. However, the path to unlocking the Keshig is quite long and tedious, so you will need to stay motivated.
You can also continue with Season 9, which includes the Javelin Cavalry, perfect for harassing enemies, or the Senji with their famous grenades.
And finally, Season 5, which allows you to unlock the Faithful. This is an average shield unit but also includes two atypical units. The first, Flamethrowers, are very useful during a push, both in defense and attack, and the Zykalian Militia, which can bombard an established setup. Be careful: these two units must be played in groups, as they are very weak on their own.
Not recommended seasons
The seasons I do not recommend, or at least not before obtaining the ones mentioned above.
Season 7 as well as Season 10.
*rixmome* And what about Season 11?
At the time I am writing this tutorial, Season 11 has not yet started, and despite some testing during the preview, I cannot really recommend these units. As for the other seasons I do not recommend, they are not necessarily uninteresting, but in my opinion, they are not part of the core unit pool needed to be effective in siege, GvG, or tournaments.
Mercenaries and auxiliary units
The third method for obtaining units is through mercenaries and auxiliary units.
*rixmome* Third? Didn’t you say there were only two?!
Auxiliary units
That’s true, but let’s say this is more of a secondary method compared to the previous two. Let’s start with auxiliary units.
Unlocked at level 10, auxiliaries are temporary units that you can only keep for one week. These units have fixed levels and equipment and are mainly useful for testing a new unit or for new players to complete their barracks and increase their in-game effectiveness. They can also be useful for saving bronze coins, as you do not need to handle their maintenance.
To unlock them, simply press U, then Mercenaries and Auxiliaries. You will notice that each week you have a number of points to spend, which at the time of this article is 700. You will therefore need to choose carefully among the available units.
Mercenaries
Let’s now move on to mercenaries. Unlike auxiliaries, these units will remain in your barracks. To obtain them, you will need to pay either with Sovereigns, which I remind you is the game’s premium currency, or with a large amount of silver coins obtainable in-game.
The advantage of these units is, once again, that you do not need to worry about their maintenance. Additionally, if a mercenary unit is part of your setup, you will receive a 10% bonus to hero and unit XP, as well as 10% extra Honor.
If you are interested in mercenaries, I recommend acquiring the Martellatori, which are a low-influence-cost unit that increases tower durability as well as their own resistances when pushing a tower.
The War Scholar
The final point that can help you unlock new units is the War Scholar.
Indeed, some quests will reward you with War Relics. These War Relics can be exchanged at the War Scholar for Synacles of a specific unit.
Concretely, each Synacle for a unit will reduce the Honor cost required to unlock that unit in the unit tree. To use a Synacle, press U, then Unit Tree, select the unit corresponding to the Synacle you obtained, and use it.
If you manage to gather 20 Synacles, you will be able to unlock the unit for free.
F4 quests
Speaking of Synacles, you can also obtain them through F4 quests, which I strongly recommend following diligently, as you will be able to obtain:
- A free T3 unit on the Path of Faith at 54 points
- A free T4 unit on the Path of Wisdom at 30 points
- And a free T5 unit once you have fully completed the F4 questsThis is already the end of this article. I hope you enjoyed it. Don’t forget the thumbs up if you liked it, and if you want to follow the channel, subscribe! I remind you that you can use the code
ZYX515 to gain access to some in-game benefits for new players, or
ZYL515 for players who haven’t launched the game in over a month
