Hi my zoulous and welcome to this new article.
In this video we are going to talk about an interesting but often forgotten cavalry unit. I present to you the Coutiliers !
Obtaining Coutiliers
Let’s start with how to obtain them.
The Coutiliers can be unlocked through the unit tree by pressing U and then cavalry. You will first need to unlock the nodes located before the unit.
Once the Coutiliers are acquired, there are several points to go over.
Veterancies Coutiliers
Let’s talk about veterancies
The Coutiliers have 2 veterancy paths.
Here we are going to focus on the top path for the additional 22% charge damage, but also for the reduced charge cooldown, which allows you to practically have your charge available all the time if you have the right doctrines.
Doctrines Coutiliers
Regarding doctrines
- It is very important to have charge cooldown reduction with the pressure doctrine as well as the charge doctrine for mounted lancers. As mentioned earlier, this allows you to charge with virtually no cooldown, making it possible to change direction during a charge and thus open up new possibilities.
- On top of that, you can add the classic hero damage and unit damage doctrines.
- The Mounted Lancers I doctrine is also interesting, adding some extra charge damage.
- Then we have two other, rarer doctrines. The first one, Assault, increases your damage when you deal damage during a charge.
- There is also another doctrine that I do not own, which increases your unit’s damage by 40% when it is below 60% health.
Masteries Coutiliers
Let’s move on to masteries

The Coutiliers also have an important mastery that globally increases your stats, but more importantly boosts your speed during a charge and adds extra damage. On top of that, the final point unlocks a mechanic triggered when you press X or V, dealing 200% increased damage or breaking guard if the attack is blocked.
And that wraps up the customization of the Coutiliers, let’s now move on to their usage.
Role of Coutiliers
The coutilier does not have many skills or playstyles; it is a charge cavalry unit. However, there are a few small details worth mentioning.
First of all, like many lancer cavalry units, this one has multiple charge states. The longer the charge, the more damage you deal. There are a total of 3 states, which can increase damage by up to 60%. You can identify these states through visual feedback on the unit (a white glow around it) as well as an audio cue similar to a gust of wind.
An interesting mechanic to know, and one that almost exclusively concerns coutiliers, is changing direction during a charge. Since coutiliers, with the right doctrines, can chain a charge immediately after finishing one.It is therefore possible to start a charge in one direction, press X to change trajectory, and then relaunch the charge. This allows you to adapt to enemy movement attempting to dodge the charge, but also to surprise opponents by making a very sharp turn very quickly.
Attention: the Coutiliers are vulnerable to anti-cavalry units. Unless you are hitting from the side or the back of an already engaged unit, avoid charging near anchored pikemen.
Formations Coutiliers
Let’s move on to formations. The Coutiliers have 2 formations.First, the dispersed formation allows you to cover more ground. It is not the most interesting formation, but it can be used in open areas, for example, to clear distant enemy units.
Next, we have the line formation, which honestly does not have much practical value.
And the final and most useful formation: the wedge formation. This one is very effective for concentrating damage on a single point and potentially breaking through enemy lines, allowing you to perform a second charge in the opposite direction afterward.
