Hi my zoulous and welcome to this new video.
In this video we are going to talk about a unit that is often underestimated but can deal quite high DPS: the Halberdier Sergeants!
How to obtain Halberdier Sergeants
Let’s start with how to obtain them.
Halberdier Sergeants are accessible through the unit tree by pressing U, then Unit Tree, then Infantry. Of course, you will need to unlock the previous units before being able to unlock Halberdier Sergeants.
Once Halberdier Sergeants are unlocked, several points are worth discussing.
Halberdier Sergeants customization
Halberdier Sergeants veterancy
Let’s talk about veterancy.
Halberdier Sergeants have two veterancy lines.
The top line mainly focuses on the unit’s charge, while the bottom line increases the unit’s stats when it is braced.
Here there is really no debate: Halberdier Sergeants are mainly played around bracing, so the bottom line is the best choice.
Halberdier Sergeants doctrines
Regarding doctrines,
First of all, it’s important to know that Halberdier Sergeants are not truly an anti-cavalry unit. They might stop a T4 unit or part of a T5 unit, but in most cases they will not last long against a full cavalry unit.
They are rather a DPS unit against infantry or heroes, so the focus should be on damage and stat increases.
Personally, I chose a damage-to-units doctrine and a damage-to-heroes doctrine.
On top of that, I added flat stats with a polearm weapon doctrine, extra damage while the unit is braced, and finally a 35% reduction in damage taken from cavalry along with a 12% increase in damage dealt to cavalry.
Halberdier Sergeants masteries
Let’s move on to masteries.
The masteries of Halberdier Sergeants are interesting thanks to the additional stats and extra models they provide, but also because of their skills.
First skill upgrade: “Steady Advance”. This mastery allows the unit to charge farther and deal more damage during a charge.
As mentioned earlier, charging is secondary for this unit, so this is only moderately useful.
Regarding “Solid Defense”, it combos with the charge and allows the unit to brace when Halberdier Sergeants hit a target.
An interesting bonus: when Stand Firm activates after a charge, you gain increased attack speed, which is visible as three quick strikes once bracing is active. If Halberdier Sergeants are well protected at that moment, it is possible to absolutely devastate the enemy.
That’s it for customizing Halberdier Sergeants. Let’s now move on to how to use them.
Using Halberdier Sergeants
Role of Halberdier Sergeants
A quick definition of the role of Halberdier Sergeants: the unit is mainly there to deal damage to infantry or heroes. You should always try to be accompanied by shielded units to be as effective as possible.
Additionally, unless you have no other choice, try to avoid fighting cavalry. With Halberdier Sergeants alone, you won’t stop much and you will probably lose the entire unit.
Halberdier Sergeants formations
Let’s now take a closer look at formations.
- First formation: the dispersed formation, or F1. Since Halberdier Sergeants are not able to stop cavalry, there is no point in using a spread-out formation, as your goal is to concentrate your damage on a single point.
- Second formation: the phalanx formation, or F2.
This is the default formation you should use with Halberdier Sergeants, as it concentrates damage the most and therefore provides the best efficiency.
- Third formation: the schiltron formation, or F3.
This formation creates a circle, but unfortunately, for the same reasons as F1, it should not be used because it spreads the unit’s damage even more.
Overall, you will use the F2 formation in about 99% of situations.
In addition to formations, Halberdier Sergeants also have several skills.
Halberdier Sergeants skills
First skill: Bracing.
Bracing allows the unit to deal more damage to enemy units and heroes. Additionally, it reduces the initial damage taken from cavalry.
Keep in mind that every time you reposition into F2 formation, this passive effect is reactivated.
If you chose the bracing veterancy line, it will also stagger the targets hit.
Second skill: Charge.
The unit will charge in the chosen direction and deal damage once the target is reached.
Let’s now move on to a few tips.
Halberdier Sergeants tips
First tip: positioning.
When playing Halberdier Sergeants, it is crucial that the unit is properly positioned in F2 formation before contact. If you aim too far when positioning, your units will try to move to the designated spot and will simply die without having done anything.
Also, if possible, try to brace on the flank or even the back of enemies to deal more damage.
